JJ Planet Plan
JJ Planet Plan
Our Pledge to Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility

As a national business that serves thousands of customers – we have a responsibility to do business the right way and add value to the many communities that we work with.

That’s why we have launched our JJ Planet Plan which sets out the good work we’ve already started and where we hope to be in a few years’ time.

We believe that realistic and meaningful goals will have a great impact on our people, our planet, and set a positive example to others.

Our team are always working to improve our environmental credentials, so by choosing to shop with us, you are choosing a business that is always working towards a better tomorrow.

Renewable Energy

Solar Power

By using renewable energy, we can reduce our carbon footprint and help mitigate the effects of climate change. That’s why we invest in solar panels across all branches.

By March 2024, all 12 JJ branches will be equipped with a total of 11,000 solar panels, covering an area equivalent to four football fields. Every year the panels are expected to generate 3,800,000 kWh in solar energy while reducing CO2 emissions by 820 tonnes.

Carbon Emissions

Fuel Efficiency
Our multi-temperature, state of the art fleet allows us to deliver fresh, frozen, chilled, and ambient products in a single delivery, helping to minimise mileage and CO2 emissions.

Routing software and telematics help us to put together the most fuel-efficient routes and support optimum driving including less harsh breaking.

Chiller and freezer doors area always kept closed when not in use to conserve energy. All drivers are scored on driving performance to maintain the highest standards.

Electric Warehouse Vehicles

Continuing our efforts to reduce energy consumption, we have invested £2.5 million to switch counterbalance and power pallet trucks from gas-powered to electric.

110 warehouse vehicles have successfully been converted from gas to electric, resulting in a reduction of 200 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Cloud Computing

We are on a journey to migrate to cloud-based services using Microsoft Azure, which has committed to being carbon negative by 2030.

By shifting to cloud-computing, we will rely less on local hardware and physical machines. The result is a reduction in energy use and environmental impact.

Sustainable Menus

Vegan Options
Catering for vegan diets is important because vegan options can be more sustainable, ethical, and healthy. Our vegan options, help to make sure there are always meat-free alternatives on menus. Sales of vegan products at JJ Foodservice have increased by 48% since 2019 and we are working with our suppliers to continue expanding the range.

✔️ Our packaging range offers biodegradable and compostable options
✔️ Eco-packaging sales have increased 130% year on year for the past five years
✔️ We have a wide range of paper-based boxes, cups, salad bowls and noodle boxes
✔️ We are committed to eliminating overall plastic usage

Reducing Food Waste

Reducing food waste helps to protect the environment, promote economic prosperity, address food security and hunger, and promote ethical and sustainable food practices.

JJ Foodservice has partnered with Fare Share, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, to pair every branch with a local Fare Share depot, helping to make sure that surplus food goes to the places that need it the most.
Early donations made by JJ to food redistribution charity Fare Share, have helped to contribute thousands of free meals to vulnerable communities.

Supporting Communities

Volunteering

Our Volunteering Scheme offers staff the opportunity to take part in charity volunteering days to increase our positive impact and contribution to local communities.

Local charities that have been supported include The Felix Project and Fare Share. Our team are regularly raising money and donating free products to local charities and schools.

Staff fundraising and a company donation helped to raise £20,000 for the Turkey Earthquake appeal.

Diversity and Inclusion

Having a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential for achieving sustainability because it helps to ensure that our solutions are fair, unbiased, and effective for everyone.

Helping to support diversity in UK catering and foodservice, JJ is a founding supporter of Women in Wholesale (WiW) and the founder and organiser of Women in Fish and Chips (WiFC) – which provides free education and marketing to takeaways.

JJ aspires to be an inclusive, friendly workplace. Supporting disadvantaged people to get back into work, our HR team openly offers free mentoring and CV-writing tips. We are always keen to work with local job centres, schools, and other communities to help people into employment.
